SBDC New Advisor Network

New SBDC Advisors Deserve a Community

The New Advisor Network is a weekly call for new SBDC advisors. Even if you have 20+ years of banking, the SBDC is a very different kind of business support organization. The New Advisor Network leverages research-backed best practices to help new SBDC advisors acclimate to the SBDC culture, connect with peers, and promote peer learning beyond the SBDC National Conference.

You've got questions,

we've got answers.

(And if not, we know where to find them or who to ask!)

Why SBDC New Advisor Network?

Psychological Safety

Psychological safety is our top priority. You are worthy. You belong here.

Peer Learning

There are no one size fits all answers. This is a space to crowdsource, collaborate & innovate.

Regular Cadence

Spaced repetition is how humans learn best. Weekly meetings create a low-barrier way to learn, test & adopt new concepts.

jokes included

Humor is a well documented ingredient to job performance. Can we be our silly, weird, goofy, authentic selves and still achieve high performance?

Yes!

The SBDC New Advisor Network is for SBDC advisors to connect, share experiences, and ask the 'dumb' questions. Leading research on highly productive teams shows us that experts often don't explain all the necessary steps and information because the knowledge and processes have become so ingrained that they don't even think to mention key points or steps! The SBDC New Advisor Network is grounded in my personal experience as a new advisor and leading scientific research on team productivity & best practices.

FAQ

FAQ

What's the catch?

No catch! Come as you are, with questions and imperfections. You are deserving of community and support. As a former SBDC advisor in a mostly rural state, I often wished for a network like this but lacked the time, resources, or confidence to create one. Now, I’m offering the space I once needed. This is my way of giving back to the SBDC advisor community that has supported me over the years, both as a former advisor and now as a small business owner. At The Founders Playground, we believe in fostering a culture of service, and this initiative is part of that commitment to community service. As an ESO support organization, giving back to the community is something I’m passionate about.

Do I have to attend every meeting?

No, attendance is completely flexible! While regular participation will help you get the most out of the network, you’re welcome to join meetings when it fits your schedule. There's no obligation to attend every session.

Is there a fee to attend?

Nope. This a completely free, no-cost program by the Founders Playground. What's in it for The Founders Playground? This program lines up with our core values and servant leadership. As a former SBDC advisor, I wish I had access to a national group of new advisors. Now, as a private consultant, I have the time and resources to coordinate & host the space.

What if I don’t know what to ask?

That’s perfectly fine! Whether you have specific questions or are just looking to listen and learn, you’re welcome. The group is here to support you, no matter where you are in your advisor journey.

How do I get the most out of the network?

The key is engagement! Ask questions, share your experiences, and offer advice to others. The more you participate, the more you'll benefit from the collective knowledge and support of the group. Remember, it’s a safe space for learning and growth.

Can center directors, administrators, or leadership join?

Yes, while the content is primarily geared toward business advising, center operations are a crucial part of an advisor's success. Directors and administrators are welcome, but we ask that leadership members be mindful of the power dynamics between advisors and leadership to ensure open and comfortable conversations. Depending on the number of participants, we may encourage you to join a breakout group more suited to your role.

What kind of questions or support is this group ideal for?

This group is designed for all types of questions related to business advising. Whether you're seeking advice on specific client challenges, strategies for managing your workload, or best practices for growing as an advisor, this is the place to ask. We also encourage conversations around personal growth, time management, and resource sharing to help you thrive in your role.

Can advisors 'outgrow' the network?

No, you can never outgrow a community like this! Whether you’re just starting out or have years of experience, lifelong learners are always welcome. There’s always room to learn, share, and grow together.
